Granite School District and Granite Police are doing an amazing job updating security procedures in trying to prevent a major incident on one of our school campuses. I fully support their efforts in this matter, and will continue to encourage them to regularly review and update these methods and training as necessary. However, major events are not the only issues of safety in our schools. Therefore, I fully embrace the following:
*Anti-bullying. School should be a place where EVERYONE feels welcome and supported. I support continued efforts to curb bullying in our schools.
*Increased funding for more school counselors, psychologists, and social workers. These people are highly trained, and assist our teachers in preventing bullying as well as making sure that our students' mental health needs are taken care of. They are also the front line for helping teach positive mental health skills.
*Safe Routes to School. We should continue to work with our local cities and townships to ensure that every student in the district has a safe route to school, including safety near school bus stops. We also need to work with local law enforcement to ensure drivers are following school zone limits and crosswalk laws.
